Coriolis Seminar - Decarbonizing Maritime Transport
Shipping’s decarbonization is underway. Regulatory change, and stake-holder and public pressure to decarbonize, impact the maritime transport. The industry will be impacted by new International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations, starting this year. Besides, ship emissions will be priced through the EU Emissions Trading System from 2024. A fuel technology transition is already underway in the maritime industry, with half the ordered tonnage capable of using LNG, LPG, or methanol in dual-fuel engines, compared to one third of the tonnage on order last year. Wind-assisted propulsion system (WAPS) technologies have gained significant attention as a means of reducing ship fuel consumption and emissions. Finally various optimization technologies for voyage optimisation, that can be deployed right away on many cargo, are available and proposed today with no CAPEX and limited OPEX costs
